Recent flash install broken?

Tagged Under : , , , , , ,

If you recently installed flash on an Ubuntu system the chances are most likely that it is broken. You can confirm this by opening a Website which uses Flash extensively. Like Youtube , IBNLive etc. Although an Update isn’t available there is a way you can fis this problem pretty easily.

Please note that this is is a temporary fix only and it is recommended that you wait for an update rather than install the temporary fix if possible. Thanks to Daradib for the post on ubuntuforums.org which solved my problem. You can find the post here. Please make sure you do install the right file from the page if you are using the temporary fix.

How to use IRC to get help on Ubuntu.

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , ,

There are sometimes that you need to get help from a live person or those Google searches aren’t doing you any good at all. In such a case your best bet is to try the Ubuntu IRC community for help. If you remember my first post about Ubuntu I mentioned about the community being a huge plus. Well if you enter the Ubuntu channel you can see that theres quite a few folks always there. To be frank, I’ve never seen the channel have any lesser than 1000 people in the channel . Now lets see on how we can use IRC to get some help.

Screenlets error in Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 64 bit installs.

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , ,

In the previous article we fixed gdesklets so that it would work on a 64 bit install. However most of the better eye candy widgets in my honest opinion are screenlets. Although installation of screenlets are pretty easy getting them to run on your machine might not be as easy. The usual error that many get is “Unable to connect or launch daemon. Some values may be displayed incorrectly.” Let try some methods of correcting this.

Gdesklets not working on 64 bit installs?

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , ,

Well I couldn’t post anything yesterday cause I was rather busy reinstalling Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon after running a package called startup manager on it to fix my usplash. I should have known better not to try to fix something that didn’t work with the LiveCD anyway. Nonetheless after the reinstall I wanted to use gDesklets but I couldn’t get it to run after installing it. For some reason it wouldn’t connect to the daemon. Anyway with the help of some posts on the forum I found out what you could do to get them to work again.

Review of the Acer 4720 Z laptop.

Tagged Under : , , , , ,

Recently my cousin brother bought a new Acer 4720Z laptop so that he could use when he goes to UK for his higher studies. Although I recommended him to buy a laptop from UK itself he preferred to have a laptop on reaching there itself rather than have to shop around for one there. Here I’m going to give you my opinion of the laptop. Read the rest of this entry »

Although I use Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon on this system I have access to another computer which dual boots into Windows XP and Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon . I noticed that the ntfs partition was not mounted by default and I wanted to be able to mount it in case I ever wanted to access the information in it. Read the rest of this entry »

Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) Recognized or not?

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Ever since I joined SMU for MCA through distance I’ve seen more people than I cared to count ask whether SMU is recognized or if it somehow dampens there chance of getting a job. “But the course isn’t recognized by the AICTE” . Let me clear something before I discuss anything more about this topic. I am talking about the distance education modules and not the regular classes conducted at the University or other Manipal University campuses.

Techcom TV Tuner Configuration in Ubuntu.

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , ,

When I was using Windows XP I bought an Internal TV Tuner card for my system so I could watch a show or two just in case someone was watching a program on TV at the same time. I found that configuring Ubuntu to use this TV Tuner wasn’t exactly a piece of cake. However I managed to get the picture and sound. Although the sound isn’t exactly very clear.

Low Bandwidth? Use APTOnCD.

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Using Ubuntu or most distros on a low bandwidth Internet connection (dial-up) becomes a pain. For example you need to have an Internet connection to get those restricted extras which allow you to play that huge library of MP3 files you have going. Although the following isn’t going to help you make your dial-up download stuff at the speed of a T3. It will definitely help you in backing up all the stuff you already have on your computer or help you in getting the files installed on your friend’s computer.
