I’ve frequently heard the question over and over again that someone couldn’t get MP3’s to play in Amarok or whichever program the person is using. I’m going to try to give you the most easiest way you could possibly accomplish this.
Let’s first make sure that we enable the correct repositories in our Software Sources. You can do this by going to System > Administration > Software Sources. Once you enter your password and continue you should see what all you have selected. Make sure you have Universe, Multiverse, Restricted selected under the Software sources as shown in the screenshot below.

Next click me . No, it doesn’t sign you up for a month’s full supply of Viagra spam or Mortgage offers. Its a simple link which basically points to apt://ubuntu-restricted-extras . A description of this package is given within Synaptic and quotes the following.
Installing this package will pull in support for MP3 playback and decoding, support for various other audio formats (gstreamer plugins), Microsoft fonts,Java runtime environment, Flash plugin, LAME (to create compressed audio files),and DVD playback.
This package allows you to play a majority of the formats you might have on you. A detailed description of the package is given here.
Here is the screen you get after clicking on the link.

After confirming and entering your password it should start to install the needed to get it to work. Some of the formats which can be used after this process are MP3, MPEG, DivX, MPEG4, AC3, DV.
( Note: On my computer with the Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon AMD64 DVD I had to download 35.7 MB for the process to complete. So if you are on dialup I definitely wouldn’t recommend it. In further posts Ill show how you could use AptOnCd to get the same done from a friend’s computer.)
