Conky - A light system monitor

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , ,

There a quite a few ways to view system stats in Linux like CPU or Hard Disk temperature. The usual ways include using gdesklets and screenlets to get the same. Although the benefit of the above is that you get rather neat looking little applets which you can place all over your desktop, they come with the disadvantage of using quite a bit more memory. With the decreasing prices of Memory this shouldn’t be an issue for most. However for those resource conscious folks who would like to view all those system stats at a low memory usage overhead then Conky is definitely the way to go.

There are sometimes that you need to get help from a live person or those Google searches aren’t doing you any good at all. In such a case your best bet is to try the Ubuntu IRC community for help. Techcom TV Tuner Configuration in Ubuntu.

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , ,

When I was using Windows XP I bought an Internal TV Tuner card for my system so I could watch a show or two just in case someone was watching a program on TV at the same time. I found that configuring Ubuntu to use this TV Tuner wasn’t exactly a piece of cake. However I managed to get the picture and sound. Although the sound isn’t exactly very clear.

Low Bandwidth? Use APTOnCD.

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Using Ubuntu or most distros on a low bandwidth Internet connection (dial-up) becomes a pain. For example you need to have an Internet connection to get those restricted extras which allow you to play that huge library of MP3 files you have going. Although the following isn’t going to help you make your dial-up download stuff at the speed of a T3. It will definitely help you in backing up all the stuff you already have on your computer or help you in getting the files installed on your friend’s computer.

Monitoring data transfer.

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , ,

If you are one of those unlucky few who has a data cap like I do on my BSNL connection then you will definitely need something reliable to monitor the amount of data transferred. BSNL’s site seem to work for people who have one of the earlier 59.x.x.x IP addresses but for new users they seem to be giving out bsnl.in accounts and the site you use to log the usage for these accounts is horrific. It doesn’t take into account the amount of data you are allowed to download. That is right now at my first month it says I already owe them Rs. 270 for downloading 304,000 + KB . In other words for 296 MB I’ve been charged Rs. 270. However the plan guarantees that you are allowed 1GB of data transfer.
